Keloid Scar Treatment
A keloid scar refers to an accumulation of collagen that develops on the skin. It occurs when there is a halt in the healing of a wound. Keloid scars usually occur in areas of skin that have been previously lacerated or burnt. However they can also occur on normal skin. In some areas multiple keloids may also occur, and tenderness, itching and pain are likely to follow. Many people opt for keloid treatment due to their unsightly appearance.
It is not certain why a keloid scar develops in some people and not in others. It is believed that disruptions in the cellular signals that control development and growth may be associated with keloid formation. This has, however, not been scientifically confirmed as yet. Keloid scars may occur in males and females, although it was believed that they occurred more commonly in women due to the higher degree of earlobe piercing. Individuals with darker skin may be more susceptible to keloid scarring. In some cases, keloid scars seem to run in the family. Keloid scar tissue is more likely to be observed on areas of the body such as the shoulders, earlobes, back and chest. It is not possible to predict if keloid scarring will occur after body piercing since the exact cause of these scars is unknown.
People who have had keloid scarring earlier should refrain from going in for piercing or elective skin surgical procedures. The keloid treatments that are available today are not completely successful and hence the best way to deal with this condition is prevention. Some natural remedies have been known to be effective for keloid scar treatment. Vitamin E cream is known to have a softening effect on the keloid tissue. It may be applied twice every day to the affected area in order to reduce the size of the scars. Calendula is also considered to be an effective cure to get rid of keloid scars, especially in the early stages of development. Calendula may be applied in cream or gel form to the affected areas. This helps to aid in healing and also reduces inflammation. One could also apply lavender oil to the keloid scars to arrest growth of the nodules. Lavender oil is known to have a rejuvenating effect on the skin cells and is another recommended form of keloid scar treatment. It is advisable to make use of home remedies only after a consultation with a doctor. One should also avoid rubbing or picking at the scars as it could aggravate the condition.
