Oily Skin Care Tips

Oily skin gets its name from the fact that the skin appears oily due to excessive oil secretions from our sebaceous glands. The secretion of oil known as sebum intends to moisturize the hair and the skin, but an excessive secretion tends to fill up and flow out of the hair follicle through the pores and spread out on the skin surface.

Oily Skin care is a must for this skin type that appears greasy and is prone to skin problems such as acne, pimples and blackheads. An oily skin turning into a problem is commonly seen among adolescents because hormonal changes influence an increase in the production of sebum.

Sebum alone does not cause problems. The problems arise when sticky sebum invites bacteria residing on the surface of the skin and get trapped in the hair follicle thus clogging the pores. If the pores become clogged, the microbes that are involved in causing acne flourish and then you get pimples, blackheads and often inflammation.

An oily skin care may not always lead to a problem prone condition, the silver lining to the dark cloud is that this skin type is generally slower to show fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration.

You cannot prevent an oily skin but you can definitely keep the oil in control to prevent the effects of excess oil. Few basic skincare tips will help you maintain the health of the skin without letting acne, pimples or blackheads get the better of you:

Oily Skin Care Tips:

  • Remember that: hormones, heat, hereditary or diet could be one of the reasons that aggravate an oily skin to a problem skin
  • Wash skin with a mild soap or cleanser once or twice daily. Keep skin clean at all times. Avoid picking and excessive scrubbing.
  • Use cosmetics sparingly or switch to oil-free products. Because oil based products tend to aggravate oily skin and create further blemishes. It is advisable to use water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics.
  • It is advisable to use products containing alpha-hydroxy acids, which remove dead cells and give skin a smoother appearance.
  • Always remove makeup before going to bed and avoid cold creams and lotions, which may leave a greasy film on your skin.
  • Consult your doctor before using retinoids (a class of drugs), known to reduce production in oil glands and shrink their size.
